Yikes MXT?? (2 replies)
Yesterday I mentioned that the sports fields I had been visiting with my MD has this red volcanic looking soil; it s highly mineralized! I said I tried to compensate by turning down the discrimination! Yikes.:surprised: I didn t mean that at all. I intended to say turning down the sensitivity.” And when did I discover that mistake? When I went to bed last night trying to get to sleep! I swear I sat bolt upright in bed realizing what I had said!I better lay off the sauce!:beers: Important? No, not really but I feel SOOOooo embarrassed!Anyway, I have a question: because the ground is so mineralized, do you think switching to the prospecting mode would be a better solution since turning down the sensitivity doesn t help that much?Regards:lol:Robert R

Sunday afternoon and we meet Ms Liberty taking a stroll……:cam: (7 replies)
It was a nice mild Sunday so the J-man and I took off for the lane. We hit one of our favorite spots and I got a large silver earing but there was a lot of can slaw so we headed out to another spot that we have not hit in a while. My elbow was complaining really bad so J-man took my Sov GT and headed out into the flats. He found the usual sinkers, lures and clad and then he came across a “cookie coin”. Cleaned it up and it turned out to be a Walking Liberty half dollar. mod_embed_images_loadimage(’0057cbc5fd5258d929eb9499509e843e’, ‘http://www.findmall.com/addon.php?26,module=embed_images,url=http%3A%2F%2Fi56.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg164%2FBobbie0115%2F02-03-08walkingliberty002.jpg’, ‘http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g164/Bobbie0115/02-03-08walkingliberty002.jpg’, ‘http://www.findmall.com/addon.php?26,module=embed_images,check_scaling=1,url=http%3A%2F%2Fi56.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg164%2FBobbie0115%2F02-03-08walkingliberty002.jpg’, ”, 657336, 400, 0, ‘Loading image …’, false); LATEST MIDWEST ADVENTURE-LAME! BE CAREFUL YA’LL! LONG! (15 replies)
This is what I sent and all I’m getting back is a lousy $159.07. The point is, I asked for a 10OZ bar and should have had the opportunity to get what I want. For those of you who sell, they are probably the best deal around, but for looters like myself, asking for a bar, is apparently unreasonable and that is my beef. I wanted a bar, as the values are increasing and now I got nothin’! Will post the invoice when received so ya’ll can see the details. Last year I was simply allowed to send a cashier’s check to make up the small difference and I got what I asked for, but this year I DID NOT GET WHAT I ASKED FOR! I AIN’T HAPPY![attachment 80367 Silverbatch2.JPG]This years silver lode from April to the present.Scott AKA Gulf HunterScott, the information you requested is on the way to you in the form of a settlement report. I should have had the opportunity to make that decision, instead of ya’ll making it for me. I don’t appreciate how this was handled. This may be the last time I use your company unfortunately, but I’m sure it really does not matter, based on how busy you are. There will be others who follow my lead. I can’t imagine that I would be that upside down on 13 troy oz. of .925. It should have been much closer, than the settlement reflects on a 10 troy oz bar. I would like an invoice copy of my results on both orders, with troy ozs received, wt. after melt, assay yield, troy oz’s contained, % payable, troy oz. payable, market price and settlement amount faxed to ……..Sincerely,Scott AKA Gulf HunterGary Frenkel wrote:Scott, your settlement was $159.07. With the $1.50 premium over the silver spot price of $16.20, for a 10 troy ounce silver bar, would be $177.00 plus shipping and insurance. Kinda a bad deal if you happen to be in a selling mood, as ya’ll just wait until the value drops and do the settlement. Just a different spin or way of looking at it. From my perspective, it is better, as I refine, so my loot is cheaper. It all comes out in the wash, as every year is different. Please don’t take offense, but you need to know how this looks to a customer. How fragile are Whites Coils? (31 replies)
I took delivery on a replacement 6 X 10 DD coil and took it out for a spin this evening and if anything its worse than the coil I sent back. Could some banging around by a UPS driver do damage to a coil? I hate the UPS drivers in our neighborhood. I’ve caught him throwing packages onto our porch from the middle of the yard. Tomorrow I’m going to run some tests to be sure, but I’m thinking I’ll have to send this coil back as well. It was falsing real easy and was easily noisier than the stock coil. Maybe I can get them to send it in a larger box and send it USPS, instead of UPS.

Random Blank Screen on MXT (8 replies)
Yesterday my screen went blank twice. Actually the second time there was a few lines that froze on the screen. I wasn’t doing anything different, it just went blank. I shut the machine off both times and then turned it back on and it was fine. Battery power is at 10. Anybody experienced this? The MXT is only about 9 months old. It was cold out (Cold for Texas), about 35 degrees but it wasn’t raining. Any ideas?

help with mxt……newbe questions (3 replies)
I have been using the mxt for a month now and seem to have problems with finding good targets in areas with iron. I was hunting this past weekend with a buddy and he was using a tejon and he was trying to help me with finding things. If he got a good target he would call me over and have me check it to see what the mxt said vrs his tesoro and I was checking in relic mode and when his called it good I would get iron hits almost solid with just a hint of what might be good. So I said no good he digs and gets a U.S. civil war button. I have noticed that if you are on the edge of a medium to large piece of iron(2 inchs+) that it will ring up good and as you pinpoint and get to center then recheck it is solid iron. I am also using the stock 9.5 coil which doesnt help and have a excellerator 6 inch on the way. I have had similar problems coin hunting in dirty areas. I hope the coil helps but am going out tomorrow again with him to a old ghost town and know I am going to run into the same problem with it (new coil will be here tomorrow evening) So I am looking for help to make my day better so I dont keep getting ribbed by him that I got the mxt when he owned one and didnt like it that it couldnt make up its mind on a target and always jumped around with every sweep. I need to show up his 500 dollar tesoro or at least not look like a fool tomorrow if possible. I just cant see digging every iron target to try to get lucky on finding a coin. I would be digging more than looking in some of these places as you cant dig a hole without getting some sort of iron. I am sure their has to be a way to know if it has a good target hidden with it or just on the outside of just iron. I have ordered the mxt edge book for tips on problems and to learn any tricks you can do with it. I do know this, if it is a good target by itself it will ring true and have found a musket ball as far as 12 inches and a pewter button at 14 inches. So it can find things a great depth just need to figure out when to dig and not to and any other good tips from people that have been using for a while that think they know something that will help. Maybe setup or I read about detuning while pinpointing. Things like that are so valueable to this. I have also tried sweeping one way then turning 90 degrees and sweeping again just to have it say iron and him to dig a good target. He is running a stock 8 inch coil on the tejon. One main question is the fact you might sweep 5 times and get iron every time but one good signal saying button does that mean that you have two targets every time? Or I am on the outside edge of iron. I cant tell when it is telling the truth so to speak.thanks to all that give tips and help.

I really need to dust off my MXT (5 replies)
I feel a bit guilty. It has been several months since I last pulled out my MXT. I usually rely on my father’s when we go treasure hunting. I should really bring it out of the closet and dust it off. It was a graduation gift so I should really use it more. It’s a great detector and I couldn’t be more happy with it.It was very easy to use and came with loads of material to get me started.

MXT and coins….question for those MXT experienced users (16 replies)
I’ve read reports on a metal detecting review site that the MXT is not a good coin finder. Those that complained about the MXT complained that it was too hot for iron and hot rocks and that it was not the best machine for coin hunting. My question is this: If the MXT is such a sensitive machine, why would it not be good for finding coins? I’m pretty new with the MXT, so I’m still learning a lot about it – and since I don’t get a lot of opportunities to hunt a lot, my learning curve is longer with it. I’m curious about those of you who are very experienced with the MXT how well you do with coin hunting, how deep you have found coins with the MXT and if you have any complaints on the MXT with hunting coins. I bought an MXT with all the optional coils, so I’m pretty much set in that regard. But any assistance that you all can offer in clarifying some of my questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Don

Toned up and went Exploring (4 replies)
I have found that I’ve been barking up the wrong tree as far as using the Explorer goes, which has lead to a disappointing outcome so far with it. After rereading a post of advice from Hard nosed Dave (thanks Dave) I dusted of the XS at the end of last week and spent a couple of afternoon’s waiving coins and other junk items over the coil and train my ears to properly distinguish the the difference in the tones of each item. After a couple of hours of this, my ears found it a lot easier to work out what the XS was telling me. I find that the screen to be fairly poor at giving information, so used it only as a confirmation as to what the tones tell me. I have now abandoned that smart find screen as a complete waste of time and only use the digital as a secondary source of information. Our modern coins read as $2 and $1=26, 50 cents=20, 20 cents=12, 10 cents=7 and 5 cents=3 on the digital screen. After a bit of fine tuning, I finally arrived at the following set up. Sens@24, Iron mask off, sounds on conduct, tones set up as, th tone @4,variabiliy@8, limits@9.selected coins mode, response, normal, fast and deep off and gain@4 (I vary it a bit for better depth perception). For me, this set up seems to work best for getting the most out of the tone system. Over time, I may mix it up a bit more and see what happens. Now for the Exploring bit.I managed to get out for a few hunts over the week end. Saturday was the longest, with a 2 hour hunt at a local school (managed to bribe my way in there about 18 months back:smile:). This was a fairly clean site , and hunting with a different premise, certainly made me stand up and tack notice. Going after the smooth flatter sounding tones and only looking at the screen after I decided to dig, gave me quite a shock as to what the screen was saying. it was often off, sometime by a lot of numbers! the most extreme case, was a target that was giving a steady reading of 14! I used the depth meter to help centre the coil and the pocket probe to help with recoveries. After recovering this target, which must have been picked up under the outer ring, even after turning through 90 degrees, it was a 10 cent piece. All I can think of, is that because it wasn’t centred, must have caused such an erroneous reading. $1 and $2 coins were coming in at anywhere from 24 to 28! One coin in particular jumped over all those numbers and wouldn’t lock on to any. It gave a smooth flat tone, so I went for it. It was a $2 coin. It is the second coin from the left on the top row in the photo. this coin showed some minor corrosion (copper content) and I’m pretty sure that this was the cause of the bad reading. (The tones didn’t get fooled.) I tested this coin at home with my Ace 250 and X-Terra 30. The Ace gave a solid reading and pinpoint, the X-Terra though, gave fluctuating numbers of 24 to 36, after many waives over the top, it finally locked onto 32, which is it’s normal reading. it couldn’t give a good pinpoint though and if I was in the field, I would have moved on and left it in the ground. On Sunday, I got to hunt at the Show ground for about 45 mins. I had another $2 coin that bounced badly, but gave a smooth tone. It also showed some minor corrosion. On Monday ( had an RDO) I hunted the show ground and another park. I went after some junky sounding tones just to confirm what the XS was telling me. About 80% of the time, using the tones mostly hunting style, I was able to figure out, what was what.Hopefully things will only improve from here.Total for the week end, $21.35.Mick Evans.[attachment 80638 RIMG1286.JPG]

White’s Vs Minelab,I’ll step up to the plate (2 replies)
This response is to Minelab Explorer user migolddigger aka Tom…………..First off I’m not Brand specific, although I’ve never used a Minelab product, I’ve used Four different White’s detectors. Still have two of those, a 6000 XL PRO and a IDX PRO MODIFIED. I just LUV them, they accomplish different detecting scenarios quite effectivly. My first White’s detector was the XLT the newest model then (1995) I used that detector for six years, and found lots of cool stuff with it.Then in the year 2001, I traded the XLT for the DFX , big mistake on my part ,the XLT was, is, a better detector IMHO.OK , now getting back to your post. You said the DFX nulls out in iron infested soil,I am in total agreement with you on this point. It also Falses a lot in these soil conditions, therefore you could possibly miss a deep target because of the multiple (both good and bad) targets under your coil. The DFX that I had (sold it this year) was very noisy, I tried correlate,it didn’t work for me,always went back to BEST DATA,as the DFX was much more quiet ,if you could call it that. I bought a 5.3 Eclipse coil for the DFX, thinking that this coil should do better in the iron infested areas that that I hunt in. It was better in the iron but not as good as my IDX PRO BCM. IN my test garden I have a Buffalo nickle buried next to some small rusty nails, the DFX with the small 5.3 would null over it, I mean completly null without hardly a sputter. The IDX with it’s two filter reponse “nailed ” the Buffalo nickle every time and in any direction of sweep. This test was with the Bullseye 5.3 on the IDX to make the test even steven.Heck, even the 6000 XL PRO, with it’s four filter medium sweep speed would give me a good enuff signal, with the 5.3,to check the the signal in a different direction of sweep to “nail” the Buffalo. Although I don’t have the XLT anymore I’m certain that it would do well in this test also,as I had a 4 in. coil with it. As an example, two buddys of mine and I were hunting an old car repair shop and filling station with it’s old “visible” gas pump still there, they were using the then NEW Tesoro Toltec II , and i was using my XLT with the 4 in. coil bolted on. This was back in the year 1996, after about 30 min. of finding nothing but rusty crown bottle caps that were reading as quarters, they were ready to go to another place to hunt. I took the XLT to where they had been hunting in the rusty bottle caps, as they were watching over my shoulder I got a smooth half dollar signal on the XLT. In amazement, they watched as i dug up a shallow coin. A very nice 1905 Barber Half, at about two in. deep,so depth isn’t everything it’s hyped up to be, when you are hunting in the iron.I have a problem with your statement, and I quote,”Gound balancing in bad soil areas, or with any other type of interferance is the downfall of White’s detectors.” Was this statement directed at the DFX or all White’s detector models? Because this not true with the two White’s detectors I now use! Or it is not true of the four Tesoro models that i use and hunt with on an alternating basis, as the is no one perfect detector in my detecting armament. Just as an example, you wouldn’t go golfing with one club in your bag would you? Also you said, quote, “The Whites DFX uses a convex coil.” Never heard of one of those, heard of a concentric coil though. “Wow I love topics like this.”, so do I and i welcome any replies even if they are negative. You have a good day Tom,I know I will because I’m going detecting with both of my White’s detectors!

Tot lot finds this morning (3 replies)
After a few days of off and on rain, we finally have clear skies. Since the place I really wanted to detect looks like a muddy murky swamp area, I decide to hit a few tot lots to get in some digging…any kind of digging is better than none. Since I was just going clad hunting I only took my garden trowel, headphones and my IDX.The first park I go to I only got 1 dime and 1 penny out of the lot. The 2nd one was a little bit better……..pulled a quarter and a nickel. The 3rd lot was the charm. And I found a small charm, and key from a Master Lock. I found a quarter and then I was getting signals left and right…swung to the left got a 25 cent, signal swung to the right and got another 25 cent signal. In a 3 foot square area I pulled quarters out like a slot machine popping out coins. Got 7 in the small area. I guess somebody must have been pitching some quarters.Got 2 nickel signals— and pulled out these “diamonds” 3 feet from each other. Too bad they are just from a bracelet and wanna be diamonds.

Hope everyone is having a nice Thanksgiving.I have read using to much Sensitivity can cause falsing. But I have been using just enough to where I can hear a faint noice in the background. My setting isnt much past the factory recommended setting, just a bit past it tho. Do any of you do this. Of course sometimes when I get a very faint signal, I will turn it up more but then go back to my original setting once I work the target. Dunno, I use to hunt years back with an old Whites coinmaster and had a hum from the threshold setting. I dont know why but I like a slight hum in the background. It doesnt seem to hurt the machines ability to locate targets or work them, even if Im in heavy iron and trash. Remember, I dont crank the sensitivity really high, just enough to hear a faint background noise.Oh, one other question. I have the 5.3 eclipse coil and my deepest coin find has been at 5 inches. I am curious about the accelerator coils, (the smaller ones). Do any of you or have any of you any experience with them and the 5.3 eclipse??? If so, how do they compare. Thanks,John

why pay more???? (27 replies)
hello, this is a question Ive been hashing over for so time now. why would i want to pay for a detector that cost say 550.00 (coin$) vs 200.00 (f2 + 4″ coil) when both units have about the same depth, and features or the ace 250 vs gtax550, f2 vs f4, 250 vs musketeer, f4 vs cz3d, is there that much difference to justify the cost. iam using the ace 250 now, but want a primary unit i can also use at the beach.should i go with the coin$, cz3d, minelab sov, advantage, etc…….or just get the f2 or f4 for a 3rd of the cost and almost the same performance

Went detecting this morning, ouch:minelab: (7 replies)
Wanted to go detecting this morning, but had 2nd thoughts when I woke to the wind wailing outside and a dusting of snow had fallen. I have a very bad habit now, “Detector Nut”. Talked myself into going. So my wife and I got to the beach and headed out.It was still sanded in, looks like the dry sand is being pulled down, a lot. Not surprised we were all alone. The temp was about 22 degrees, that wasn’t bad, we’ve done that before. It was the wind, it was steady at about 25mph and gusting a lot to 35 mph. I check the wind chill chart when we got home, it put the temp to about 1 degree, yea.:clapping: My wife brought some of her knitting in-case she wanted to go back to the car. She stuck it out though, what a Trooper:help:.:surrender: Well we both only made it 35 minutes. The north west wind was blowing the dry sand down to what should have been wet sand. It was low tide and instead of 100′ of wet sand there was only about 10′. The dry sand didn’t stop blowing. When ever there was a gust it looked as if we were detecting after a Captain Morgans Party. (Stagger, Stagger, Stagger) Anyone up on the road must have been laughing. Almost went down a couple of times. My scoop kept getting blown into my leg. OK, can’t feel my finger tips anymore, time to go. We left with a dime, a penny, and 3 piece of foil.:nopity:Got to the car warmed up my finger tips,(they hurt worse warming them back up) and said to my self “you woisy, go to another beach” :crazy:so off I went, headed a few miles south to a beach that had a little more protection from the north west winds.Got there and it was much better or I was still numb and it just felt better. This time she stayed in the car. After about an hour she came looking for me. She said, “I thought I should check on you in-case you got wet and froze here”. I hadn’t found any rings and I was determined to keep going. So I stayed another 20 minutes and still nothing. She was starting to look a little chilly so I called it a hunt. I’m still a little numb typing this.:nopity: So the scoop: NO jewelry, $1.08 in clad, 2- half destroyed matchboxes, a game token, a fishing weight, and some of the regular trash foil and tabs.I Can’t Wait To Do It All Over Again.:detecting:
